• 1.Trinity College & the Book of Kells — Ireland's oldest university, a cobbled 16th-century campus in the middle of the city, home to the dazzling illuminated Book of Kells and the jaw-dropping Long Room library — a barrel-vaulted hall of 200,000 old books. Book the timed ticket ahead; the courtyards are free.
• 7.National Museum — Archaeology — One of Europe's great small museums, and free — Iron Age 'bog bodies', hoards of Celtic gold, and the exquisite Tara Brooch and Ardagh Chalice. The whole deep story of ancient Ireland in a couple of hours, on the grand Georgian south side.
• 8.St Stephen's Green — The city's beloved Victorian park — 22 acres of lawns, a lake, bandstand and flowerbeds, ringed by Georgian grandeur, where all Dublin comes to eat lunch in a rare hour of sun. The green lung at the top of Grafton Street; free and lovely.
• 9.Grafton Street — Dublin's pedestrian shopping spine, and its best free show — buskers who go on to be famous, flower sellers, and the old-world Bewley's café. Walk it up to the Green, dip into the lanes off it for the good pubs, and feel the pulse of the south side.
