• 4.Sforza Castle & Sempione Park — The mighty red-brick fortress of Milan's Renaissance rulers, now a cluster of museums (including Michelangelo's final, unfinished Pietà), opening onto the big, leafy Sempione park behind. Free to wander the courtyards; a grand, green break from the city, and lovely at golden hour.
• 7.Pinacoteca di Brera — One of Italy's great art galleries, in the heart of arty Brera — masterpieces of Italian painting from Raphael, Caravaggio, Mantegna's foreshortened 'Dead Christ' and Piero della Francesca, in a grand old palazzo. A superb, manageable collection; the perfect pairing with a wander round the quarter.
• 11.The Brera district — The most romantic corner of Milan — a village-like tangle of cobbled, ivy-draped streets full of little galleries, antique shops, fortune-tellers and candlelit restaurants, best in the early evening. Wander with no plan, stop for an aperitivo, and enjoy the one part of workaday Milan that feels like a film set.
