Western Europe

Netherlands

Canals, bikes, and a small country that runs like a watch.

expensiveEuro ()

The Netherlands is what happens when a nation spends eight centuries negotiating with water and wins. Half the country sits below sea level, all of it is flat, and the result is the world's most civilised cycling culture and cities built at human scale. Amsterdam is the draw — seventeenth-century canals, world-class museums, a live-and-let-live streak that's older than most countries — but the trains are so good that Haarlem, Utrecht and the tulip fields are all day trips without a car.

What things cost: The Netherlands is firmly in Europe's expensive tier — Amsterdam hotel prices are among the continent's highest and a beer on a canal terrace knows what it's worth. The saving graces: superb cheap supermarkets, herring stands, and a flat rail network that makes basing outside the centre painless. When a zone below says 'low', that means low for the Netherlands.
