• 1.The Markthal — The horseshoe-shaped market hall with apartments arced over a food court, its vast curved ceiling painted with a psychedelic 'Horn of Plenty' mural. Come hungry — a hundred stalls of cheese, stroopwafels, Surinamese roti and more under one huge roof.
• 2.The Cube Houses — Piet Blom's forest of yellow houses tilted onto their corners, the most photographed thing in Rotterdam — and you can step inside the 'Show Cube' to see how anyone actually lives at 45 degrees. Delightfully strange, right by the Markthal.
• 4.Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen — The world's first fully public art storage — a giant mirrored bowl reflecting the whole city, with 150,000 works stacked on view across its floors and a rooftop forest and restaurant on top. Go for the building and the roof even if you skip the art.
• 12.The Kunsthal — Rem Koolhaas's early landmark in the Museumpark — not a collection but a machine for changing exhibitions, from fashion to photography to pop culture, always worth a look. Architecture buffs come for the building; everyone else for whatever's on.
• 15.Dutch bites & world flavours — Half of Rotterdam's food is Dutch classics — fresh herring from a stand, hot bitterballen with a beer, a fresh stroopwafel — and half is the flavours the port brought in, from Surinamese roti to Cape Verdean cachupa. Graze across both; it's the taste of the city.
