Sweden is Scandinavia at its most easygoing — a long, forested, water-laced country of red cottages, clean design and a deep love of coffee and cake (they even have a word for the ritual, fika). Stockholm, the capital, is spread across fourteen islands where a great lake meets the Baltic — a beautiful, breezy city of a preserved medieval core, world-class museums and a summer that barely gets dark. Expensive but never showy, green, and remarkably easy to be in.
What things cost: Sweden is expensive, though a notch below its Nordic neighbours — dinner and drinks add up fast, but the coffee-and-bun fika habit is affordable and everywhere, and many museums are free. A card pays for everything; cash has all but vanished. When a zone below says 'low', that means low for Stockholm, which is still dear.

The day the Nobel Prizes are presented, on the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death — the ceremony at the Concert Hall and the glittering white-tie banquet in the City Hall's Blue Hall. You can't get into the banquet, but the whole city feels the occasion.
