The fairy-tale white turrets and terraces on Castle Hill, framing the best view in the city across to Parliament, beside the tiled roof of Matthias Church. Free to wander (the upper terrace charges a little); magical at sunrise before the crowds.

The great royal palace crowning Castle Hill, now home to the National Gallery and museums, ringed by ramparts with sweeping views. Ride the old funicular up from the Chain Bridge, then wander the cobbled lanes of the district around it.
The stately stone lions and iron chains of the Széchenyi Chain Bridge — the first permanent span across the Danube here, and still the city's heart. Walk it at night with Parliament and the castle lit up on either bank; unbeatable.
The city's grandest church, its dome the exact height of Parliament by decree, holding the mummified right hand of Hungary's first king. Climb (or lift) to the dome walkway for a 360° view over the rooftops, and catch an organ concert if you can.
Budapest's genius idea — bars thrown up in derelict courtyards and tenements, packed with mismatched furniture, fairy lights and a whole city out drinking cheap. Szimpla Kert started it; the whole Jewish quarter is full of them now. The night out.
The largest synagogue in Europe, a striking Moorish-revival building with a memorial garden and a moving Holocaust museum. The heart of the old Jewish quarter, and essential for understanding the district around it.
The grand tree-lined boulevard, a UNESCO site, running from the centre to Heroes' Square — lined with mansions and cafés, and the lavish Hungarian State Opera House. Ride the little yellow M1, the oldest metro on the continent, beneath it.
The vast ceremonial square at the top of Andrássy, colonnades wrapped around the chieftains who founded Hungary — opening onto the City Park, its castle, boating lake and the Széchenyi baths. Grand history and green space in one.
The huge, colourful covered market at the end of the shopping street — paprika, salami and Tokaji wine downstairs, and stalls of lángos (fried dough with sour cream and cheese) up top. The best spot to eat and shop like a local.
The rocky hill on the Buda side, topped by the Liberty Statue and a citadel, with the single best panorama over the whole city and its bridges. Walk up through the woods (or take a bus), and finish at the Art Nouveau Gellért Baths at its foot.
The city's showpiece is its riverfront, and it's at its best from the water after dark, when Parliament, the castle and the bridges are floodlit gold. An hour on an evening boat, drink in hand, is the cheapest bit of magic in Budapest.
Hearty and paprika-rich — a real bowl of gulyás (a soup, not a stew), chicken paprikás, chimney cake, and lángos from a market stall. Wash it down with a glass of Tokaji or a shot of pálinka; cheap, filling, and the taste of the place.
The long green island in the middle of the Danube — no cars, just parkland, a musical fountain, medieval ruins, a running track and a summer lido. Rent a bike or a pedal-cart and escape the city without leaving it. Locals' favourite Sunday.

Worth knowing: No beach, but the Danube and the thermal baths are the water here — and there's a proper river beach and lidos on Margaret Island in summer. Buda is the hilly, quiet side; Pest is the flat, lively one.

A pretty riverside artists' town just upstream — cobbled lanes, baroque churches, galleries and marzipan shops in a jumble of pastel houses. The easiest and sweetest half-day trip from the city.

Where the Danube swings south in a dramatic curve between the hills — the hilltop castle of Visegrád and the great basilica of Esztergom above the water. Green, historic and lovely by boat in summer.

A baroque wine town in the northern hills — a castle that held off the Ottomans, a minaret marking how far they got, and the 'Valley of the Beautiful Women', a lane of cellars pouring Egri Bikavér (Bull's Blood). A great overnight.

Central Europe's biggest lake and Hungary's summer playground — shallow warm water, lido beaches, vineyards on the north shore and party towns on the south. The closest thing to a seaside a landlocked country has, and it does it well.

Good time to goBudapest is two cities in one — hilly, historic Buda and flat, buzzing Pest — split by the Danube and stitched together by grand bridges. It's one of the most beautiful capitals in Europe and among the best value, a place where you can soak in a century-old thermal bath, eat goulash under Art Nouveau ceilings, and drink till dawn in a crumbling 'ruin bar', all in a day. Imperial grandeur with a rough, fun edge.
