• 1.The Hungarian Parliament — The vast neo-Gothic Parliament on the Danube, all spires and a red dome, is the image of the city — floodlit gold at night and dazzling from the Buda side. Tour the crown jewels and the grand staircase inside, or just walk the embankment at dusk.
• 5.The Chain Bridge & the Danube — The stately stone lions and iron chains of the Széchenyi Chain Bridge — the first permanent span across the Danube here, and still the city's heart. Walk it at night with Parliament and the castle lit up on either bank; unbeatable.
• 6.St Stephen's Basilica — The city's grandest church, its dome the exact height of Parliament by decree, holding the mummified right hand of Hungary's first king. Climb (or lift) to the dome walkway for a 360° view over the rooftops, and catch an organ concert if you can.
• 11.The Great Market Hall — The huge, colourful covered market at the end of the shopping street — paprika, salami and Tokaji wine downstairs, and stalls of lángos (fried dough with sour cream and cheese) up top. The best spot to eat and shop like a local.
• 13.A Danube evening cruise — The city's showpiece is its riverfront, and it's at its best from the water after dark, when Parliament, the castle and the bridges are floodlit gold. An hour on an evening boat, drink in hand, is the cheapest bit of magic in Budapest.
